Is MS in MIS worth coming to US for? ...(contd)

I probably forgot to add one point in my last articles...That was the cheat sheets :)
Yes, even those are allowed in Masters program here!

Here is then the crux:
Most of the US universities realize the source of their income i.e. India. Thus more and more universities are trying to follow up the routine procedures that are followed in Indian Curriculum. This is to provide the comfort level to students in order to retain them. Thus in order to really learn something in your masters career, you yourself will have to exploit the technology that is available at a great ease. The curriculum for MIS is not something you don't find in India, but its the surroundings that make these institutes continue at this scale...

Instead of replying to each one separately in an email, why don't you post your feedback on the topic in a separate blog. many of the questions are repeated, and your insight would be helpful.

I am in the same situation as the others, moderate experience in consulting/oracle/engineer, but interested in MSc in MIS.

please advise!

Manish said...

Hi All,

I am writing this as a general guide on request from you all:

How is the course?
Well, honestly I like the course a lot. There is lot to learn (if you desire to). Most of the professors will trigger your mind towards whatever is hot in industry and then you have to carry on from there as per your interest. For eg., I learnt DBs, Business Intelligence, Enterprise Systems, SOA, Knowledge Management. Again the choice of courses may vary depending upon your choices and offerings from the university you join...

Job prospects:
Most of the MIS folks land up with an analyst or consultant role. Companies assume that MIS folks understand technology and how to effectively manage it. Thus I will always recommend you all to take industry exposure for at least 1 or 2 yrs before you come in US for masters unless you very well know why you want to do masters.

In case you still have any queries, don't hesitate to shoot me an email...

Take care...

HI Manish,
Thanks for sharing this valueable information with us.

Can you please tell us the current placement scenario in US for MS MIS background..... do we have to struggle a lot for getting a job....

also if you can throw some light on internship scene ....

Thanks a lot,
Avinash

Manish said...

Hi Avinash,

I would start of with a set of threatening facts. The job cuts in the month of Feb were the highest US has ever seen in the history. The economic slowdown is also the worst since a 2001. So job situation for an average person is a little tough. But hey, do you really think you are just an average? Its only that feeling that one has to beat and foresee the future industry/market trend and prepare well for it. I bet every consulting firm is still recruiting and more businesses are coming forward to embrace IT to help smoothen their business process.

Coming to the stats For MIS:
Internship-
Kelly had a 100% placement
Eller had a 100% placement
TAMU had around 60-70% placement
CMU - Not sure

Full Time-
I really don't have stats on this but most people manage to get some work or the other which has relevance to IT...

Hope I answered your queries...

Best,
Manish

Hi Manish,

This is Lokesh. You mentioned that the curriculum in MIS is not so different from that offered in India. I would like to know about the universities in India which offer MS in MIS (or atleast similar course) and also is it worth doing it in India or US?

Manish said...

@Lokesh,

If I ever said that MS here is pretty much same as the curriculum back in India, I would probably beg to differ a bit. There are some courses which have the same scope as subjects taught back in India...but the amount of exposure, even for those subjects is amazing. Besides, there are other subjects which have all together a different scope than their counterpart back in India and some don't exist at all...So it is definitely worth coming to US for MS as long as you can afford it...!

Hi Manish,

Your MIS posts are very much informative. I am very much interested in the MIS program, but i have qualms regarding the curriculum.

a) I have an aversion for programming, is this course towards the same or can i totally orient myself to a business perspective to avoid programming ( I also like management with a tinge of IT). Is this feasible and please can list some univ that offer that flexibility ?

b) I am looking at Management Consulting as a career option, will MS in MIS help me achieve this ??

Thank you very much for your time.

That was a good article and right to the point. After reading your article, now I am thinking twice applying to a MIS program, if I don't get benefits out of it then why to waste thousands of dollars, if it just going to be another diploma added to your hat (I know how I did my previous MS in US, and it is a similar story to ur').....The Best!

hi!!!!
this is neha ashok. i am doing my BE , final year, in computer science @ RVCE, bangalore.....i am really, thoroughly, fully, properly CONFUSED bout how good MIS is.these are a few of my doubts, PLEASE clarify them... i will be very very thankful for any help!!!

1) is the course very expensive (more expensive than other MS courses) ??
2)what are the job prospects after doing MIS? is it better than doing MS in comp sci if we are more interested in management rather than technical stuff??
3)what kind of jobs do we get after MIS ? is it better than the jobs after MS in CS?if yes, how??
4)is MIS a solution for cs engineers who want to drift away from CS? i hate programming!! and i would have loved to do MBA if not for the compulsory work ex requirement!!

Hi Manish,

I am planning to do my MS in MIS. I have done my B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engg. from Manipal. Presently, I am working with Accenture. It has been 2 years 3 months. I had written my GRE in 2007 and got a score of 1250. Do you think I should write it again? I am contemplating to write it again in October 2010 so that I can apply for the session next year i.e. Aug 2011. I have a few more questions. My GPA is 7.02 in B.E.

1. What is the minimum score required to get in GRE for applying to universities for this course?
2. Can you suggest at least 5 good universities that I can apply to for pursuing this course, that charge nominal/affordable tuition fees and in terms of good placements (Placements is an important concern as the loan amount etc. need to be repaid)?
3. Also, universities offering some kind of scholarships or financial aids.
4. The job prospects after completing this course as I am not very interested in programming. I am looking at Management consulting as a career option.
5. Internship options

Looking forward to your reply. My email ID is rashi1232001@gmail.com

Guys, I want to ask you one question. Now a days u r very much aware that USCIS has restricted on H1B and its very difficult to get sponsership. So after the study completes even US job market is very good now they will not be willing to sponsership H1B and at the end of the day you have to return to India. Is it possible you guys to pay the study loan working in india??? Think multiple times before jumping to any conclusion.

Hi Manish,

I have 8+ years of experience in the software industry and now thinking of MS in MIS.

Please let me know a few things -
1. Should I go with thesis or non-thesis option?
2. How would you rate SUNY Buffalo in terms of curriculum, job scenario etc.? I am thinking of SUNY Buffalo because they are offering 1 year course. Otherwise, thinking of choosing non-thesis option so that I can complete my MS in lesser period.
3. I am working as a project manager. What position will I get when I complete MS?
4. If wanted, will I get to do my Ph.D if I go to SUNY Buffalo or choose non-thesis option/

Hi,

GRE Score: 1050(v:320, Q:730)
Qualification : BE in compsci (2011) with 61% aggregate, Pune University
BE project: Web based under SadakMap.com

Queries:
Scope of MS in MIS?

MS in MIS or MBA in India for Business analyst?

Can you suggest some Universities on this score?

If i take admission in midiocre university, to what extent it will affect placements as compared to good universities?

I heard MIS Course mostly dont have scholarships even if you get GRE score above 1400, is it true?

What is the expenditure (tution fee, accomodation+food) , if i dont get scholarship?

GRE or GMAT does it affect scholarship?

I would be highly obliged if you help me answering these queries.
