Is MS in MIS worth coming to US for?

I won't give you the direct answer because I first want you to read my reasoning that will support my answer.
Back gone are days when MS curriculum was popularly known for research and innovation! Today, I am preparing for one of the tests to be held 4 days from here on and I already have a question bank (QB) in my hand (...a typical Indian scenario). Now I really don't know whether to approach a book, read complete stuff and score less than others or concentrate on my GPA by preparing for only questions that are there in QB. If I go for reading a book, that shall definitely give me answers to all questions but will again consume time and I may not complete my run till the exam time!
The scenario is not restricted to just one subject. Almost all the courses lie under that category! hardly do I see professors asking to think and implement out-of-box strategies. All you need for a good GPA in MIS is mugging power. Most of the questions in exams are theory based with limited scope of applying your intelligence! I mean if you are being asked some author's theory, you just can't go on blabbering your own! You can definitely bring your own examples, but that to me is restricting or rather closing the doors of innovation and is just creating followers for theories that are well recognized into industries.
If you at all are considering to major in MIS and still have an option to differ, I would request you to differ. MIS will surely fetch you a job...a decent one...But is that the only reason you come here? If yes, I don't want you to visit my blog any more...
To end, best of luck for whatever your career pursuits are...But don't make it a major in MIS...

Hi,

Probably you can help me in deciding against MIS.
Which i want to since i was actually worried that these specialised courses might be a little bookish in nature.
Just that these courses give a false image of a lucrative career in IT. Which we will any how have.

We would start by first getting to know where you did your MIS course.
Send me a mail on ishubhatia@ gmail.com
And if you are okay we will discuss a bit on the course oreintation in a more general way.
and more importantly where do MIS grads land. (background in Indian IT) .

Thanks.

Hi Manish... Your blog has brought to fore some of the disturbing sides of an MS in MIS ,not found on many other forums.its credibility is unquestionable since uv undergone the course yourself.i would have like to discuss a little more with you about this field and what it entails.Besides the opinion back here in india about an MS in MIS is very upbeat though not much info is there from people actually pursuing it.Your article has definitely made me rethink about majoring in MIS . and considering the finances involved i definitely wudnt wanna take any chances.ll be applying for FALL 2011.will really appreciate it if u could take out some time from your busy schedule.
Thanks in advance

Hi Manish,

Great blog and great posts. You're doing a very helpful job of supplying first hand info to clueless Indian students.

My question is also pertaining to Ms in MIS studies in US after BTech in CS from India.

Considering I do go for a masters in US by fall 2012, I will be having 2 years of Business Analysis work-ex in a leading Us based IT company and I like this area of work.

Pertaining to the above profile, considering I land a decent (not a top) Tech. School to pursue an MS in MIS degree, what would be my job prospects (quality and availability of the job) keeping normal US scenario in mind.

You can consider following questions from me:
- Most of the people say MIS grads also land up in core CS/IT jobs, even if that's true, what I want to know is will a potential employer prefer a MS in CS grad to give a programming job than an MS in MIS grad?

- Even if an MIs grad does work in a programming job for sometime to gain more of IT experience, will he/she not have an edge to get into business roles once more experience in accumulated?

you can answer the above and/or can add more info that you think would be useful for me as a candidate to know.
